COAT COLOR

MELANOCORTIN 1 RECEPTOR

Melanocortin receptor 1 (MC1R), also known as Extension, is responsible for much of the variability in the coat color of cattle breeds and determines, among others, the black color in Angus or the red in Limousine. It can serve as both an indicator of crossbreeding as well as validating fit to the racial standard. Given the recessive pattern of some alleles, their determination through genetic tests is essential in the case of carrier animals.
